Manuʻa Cession Day

July 16, 2025 marks 121 years since the signing of the Deed of Cession by the Tui Manuʻa, formally annexing the Manuʻa Islands into the United States territory of American Samoa.

On this day in 1904, at the Faleula in Lalopua, the leaders of Manuʻa gathered to affirm the island group’s place within the U.S. protectorate. Though the Tripartite Convention of 1899 had already divided the Samoan archipelago between Western powers, Manuʻa remained independent—until this moment.

This historic agreement forever changed the course of Manuʻa’s future, and today we honor the wisdom, courage, and legacy of the people who shaped that path.
